The root of Excellence

(Comes from Greek)

is not, in its proper form, to surpass others or to be greater than them, but rather,

to rise up naturally, to evolve like a crop is raised.

The oldest root in the world from the Greek- is that for HILL.

Imagine that hills were not placed on the landscape to make the prairies feel flat.

They were not raised to make the sky tremble. Their job is to be hills.

We do not know why, but we know a hill-less terrain would be unbearable.

POEM from “The Dream of the United Field”, Jorie Graham, Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, 1996.
